Belleville, Ill. – Both of Lindenwood – Belleville’s tennis teams were in action on Tuesday evening, and both ended their matches with a victory.
Men’s and women’s tennis fielded their first home match on Tuesday, but had to change locations due to a rain-soaked tennis court. Both teams moved inside to Kings Point Tennis Club and took full advantage of playing on the courts where they spent most of the winter in practices.
The Lady Lynx, playing in their second game of the season, seemed unfazed after a 1-6 loss to Principia last week. In doubles action, Lindsey Waters and Jessica Moss teamed up to beat Maggie Pohl and Molly Miller 8-2. Jessica Moss and Cecilia Sanchez also teamed up for an 8-2 victory while Ashley Janish and Miranda Scher shut out their opponents, giving the Lady Lynx a great start to the day.
In singles action, all of the ladies, with one exception, were able to pull out 2-0 victories. In the lone defeat for LU – Belleville, Miranda Scher lost 0-6 in the first set, but came back to force the final set to an extra game. However, Fontbonne’s Megan Schmittel made just enough shots to take the victory, 7-5.
The Lynx men completely shut out the Griffins, winning 7-0 in their first match of the season.
In doubles action, LU – Belleville’s Michael Ludgate (Belleville West Alumnus) and Shaun Jorden defeated Bryton Curtis and Karl Faust of Fontbonne 8-1. Also winning for the Lynx were the teams of David Woo and Quoc Nguyen, as well as Eric Downey and David Bennett.
In singles action, every player from LU – Belleville had straight set victories. David Bennett, who played in doubles, did not play in singles. In his place, Rodney Atwaters saw his first action this season, defeating the Griffins’ Andrew Cohen, 6-3 and 6-1.
