On November 1st the USCAA invited the top eight ranked teams in the country to the 2009 Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament in Vermont. Lindenwood – Belleville missed an invitation by three spots, finishing the season as the No. 11 ranked team in the country.
While disappointed they won’t compete for a national title, the team accomplished more than anyone could have imagined in their inaugural season. Less than 6 months ago, the Lindenwood – Belleville soccer field was entirely dirt. And less than 3 months ago, the team gathered for the first men’s soccer practice in Lindenwood – Belleville history. Yet today, they end their season with a 6-3-2 overall record and a No. 11 USCAA national ranking. Coach Dan Hogan said, “To start a new program from scratch and almost qualify for the national tournament speaks very highly about the character of the team and its individuals.”
The Lynx still hope to secure individual awards as four Lynx players (Luis Serrano, Brandon Jackson, Daniele Stabile, and Alejandro Lopez) have received National Player of the Week honors throughout the season. Stabile finishes the season 7th in the nation in goals, 8th in total points, and 9th in assists. Lopez isn’t far behind, finishing 21st in goals, 16th in total points, and 12th in assists. Jackson broke the top 25 in assist per game and Serrano did in goals scored. All Americans are scheduled to be named this week by the USCAA national office.
Looking back over Lindenwood – Belleville’s inaugural men’s soccer season Coach Hogan said, “I am proud of the way we came together in such a short period of time. We improved each day, each week and each game and we are really excited about next year. I think we all have a better idea of what it will take to qualify for the national tournament in 2010.”
