The No. 13 nationally ranked Lindenwood University – Belleville men’s soccer team will stop practice on October 22nd for an opportunity to give back to the local community. Adjacent to the new Lindenwood – Belleville soccer field is Belleville’s Union Elementary School where a unique relationship has developed with Coach Hogan’s team.
The connection began back on October 7th when the Lynx were tied 0-0 against Danville Area Community College heading into halftime. As the team walked from their locker room toward the field they were inspired by a group of unified voices cheering, “Go Lynx, Go Lynx.” The voices were none other than Union Elementary’s afternoon latchkey children. As the cheers continued, the children aligned to give each player a high five before returning to the field. Encouraged and energized, Lindenwood – Belleville scored 2 goals in the second half and defeated Danville 2-0.
To show their appreciation, the soccer team has invited Union latchkey to practice on Thursday, October 22nd at 4 p.m. The children will meet the players and take part in a variety of activities. Coach Hogan said, “Our players are really excited to work with the kids. It will be a great way to show the children how much our guys appreciate their support.” Despite strong support from the Lindenwood – Belleville administration, Coach Hogan ranks the Union afternoon latchkey children as his team’s number one fans.
